Ode to Gilmerton Cove for SOLAR Pavilion 2011 - Gilmerton Cove is a series of hand carved passageways and chambers that lie below ground to the south of Gilmerton crossroads. There are various theories behind the origins of Gilmerton Cove which, after extensive archaeological and historical research, still remain a mystery. However some theories are that it was the unique work of an 18th century local blacksmith George Patterson, a drinking den for gentry, a refuge for persecuted Covenantors and a smugglers lair. - Gilmerton Cove website.

Gilmerton Cove

My contribution towards the SOLAR pavilion project is Ode to Gilmerton Cove. I worked with 4 local musicians, who have responded to film soundtracks that reference caves and sub areas to create a new piece of music that was recorded live in the Cove.

The sounds were recorded on 4 separate microphones in different cave chambers at Gilmerton and are designed to be played back in the SOLAR Pavilion on 4 separate speakers to map the cove and transport the atmosphere of the cave from one location to another. Ode to Gilmerton Cove will be played in the Solar Pavilion on September 3rd 2011 as part of a performance event. The works can also be downloaded on to mp3 players and listened to whilst visiting Gilmerton Cove.
