The basic idea of NAME IN LIGHTS was to curate an event that would bring contemporary performance art to the public, to a non-arts audience. It was a collaborative project conceived by myself and Shona Handley. Name in lights presented a cast of artists whose work was varied in content but unified by the need for an audience and the want to respond to a specified setting and place. The event was held in the very public Princes Street Gardens in the Ross Bandstand. Participating artists were Craig Coulthard, John Farrugia, Oliver Herbert, Tessa Lynch & Shona Handley and Jenny Hogarth & Kim Coleman.
HOW TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE IN 9 EASY STEPS (work above) was a performance meant to catch people at their most reflective as Princes Street Gardens is a ‘getaway’ place, a lunch time place, between home, work and commerce. The performance acted out Eve Weir’s Pocket Book of Change, her directions, overtly splashed over the stage in a style akin to advertising or set design. This public display referenced the fact that in today’s society, depression, anxiety and stress are now common place and are no longer private pursuits, our aim was therefore to help many, together.
